Martin's 'Guns-N-Hoses' team wins gold medal Florida Police & Fire Olympics
Friday, 27 June 2008

— With a little more than a minute left on the clock, a Martin County firefighter’s hockey slap shot goal shattered a tied scoreboard and snagged the gold medal at last week’s Florida Police & Fire Olympics.

Firefighter Brad Reynolds’ team of Martin County Fire Rescue and Stuart Police Department officers — called the “Guns-N-Hoses” — was just one of the Treasure Coast law enforcement teams participating in the Olympic games. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office men’s softball team won a silver medal, and Capt. Casey Szparaga, a world amateur champion of arm wrestling, earned another gold this year in his signature event. Deputy Donald Kelly, who works at the Martin County Jail, won two silver medals and a bronze in shooting events.

THUMBS UP:

GIVING BACK: Unprecedented.

There's no other way to describe the decision by Martin County's 250 fire rescue workers to forgo 5 percent cost-of-living raises in the upcoming budget.

The raises amount to about $1.5 million. Fire rescue employees offered the concession to help maintain the current level of service provided by the department. One of the budget-cutting proposals currently being considered would reduce staffing on emergency vehicles in the busiest fire stations.

By giving back money guaranteed in their contract, fire rescue workers hope to avoid longer response times to fires and medical emergencies.

"As Martin County residents and taxpayers, we recognize the financial crisis is real," said Todd Tucker, the union's vice president. "That's why we are willing to invest our own earnings to ensure no citizen in Martin County has to wait longer for a fire truck or an ambulance to arrive at their (time of) need."

Kudos to the county's fire rescue workers. Their concession is timely, strategic and sacrificial.

Tough choices.

That's what I told Angela Van Etten when we were talking about county budget cuts that might force Community Coach to reduce routes or service to the handicapped and elderly who rely on the program for transportation.

Van Etten is with the Coalition for Independent Living Options and an advocate for people who use the service.

She says any cuts would be devastating and was one of the organizers of a rally outside the Martin County Commission chambers Tuesday where about a dozen advocates for the program gathered to plead their case.

More than 2,000 Martin County residents rely on these programs to get to their doctors, to the drug store and dozens of other places, she said.

I agree, it provides a vital service to some of our most vulnerable.
